What is CBDA?

What is CBDA?
You may be familiar with CBD a.k.a. cannabidiol, one of the more commonly known and researched compounds in the cannabis sativa or hemp plant. Cannabidolic acid or CBDA is the raw acid form of CBD and the most abundant phytocannabinoid found in hemp before heat is applied in the extraction process or during combustion when plant matter is smoked.
While CBD can be relaxing and have many medical benefits including anti-inflammatory properties, it doesn’t have the psychoactive or intoxicating effects of THC (Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol). Similarly, CBDA is not intoxicating. CBDA has therapeutic applications that differ slightly from CBD including anti-convulsant and anti-anxiety properties.
Therapeutic Properties of CBDA
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-emetic
- Anti-convulsant
- Anti-carcinogenic
What is Decarboxylation?
One method of CBDA extraction is slow cooking hemp flower in coconut oil over low heat. When the heat exceeds approximately 175 Fahrenheit or 80 degrees Celsius, cannabinoid acids give up a carbon dioxide molecule and transform into a neutral state of CBD - we call this process “decarboxylation”. The equivalent is true for THCA, which transforms to the psychoactive compound in cannabis THC when decarboxylated.
Research Around CBDA
Consumption of cannabis sativa is known to up-regulate or down-regulate the body to achieve homeostasis. This process can support optimal heath and diminish the risk of illness.
While we don’t know as of yet what formulas will work for specific types of cancer, researchers have found that CBDA may be beneficial in treating or preventing some types of breast cancer.
In one 2014 study, scientists reported that CBDA could potentially inhibit breast cancer metastases related to the expression of Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Their report indicated that the results of the study “demonstrated that i) CBDA had dual inhibitory effects on COX-2 through down-regulation and enzyme inhibition, and ii) CBDA may possess the ability to suppress genes that are positively involved in the metastasis of cancer cells in vitro.”
Where can I buy CBDA?
