Data Shows Lower Rates of Obesity and Lower BMI in Cannabis Consumers
A 2011 report shares the results of a study indicating that those individuals who consume cannabis three times per week have an 8% lower prevalence of obesity versus those who don’t consume cannabis. The study referenced “data from 2 representative epidemiologic studies of US adults aged 18 years or older, the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC; 2001-2002) and the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication (NCS-R; 2001-2003).”
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the ratio of weight to height. In the study above, the authors accounted for sex and age and concluded that there was also a healthier BMI in the cannabis consumers over those who do not consume cannabis.
In another study, this time with an Inuit population, 786 adults from the Nunavik Inuit Health Survey (2004) were evaluated. Subjects completed a confidential questionnaire where they disclosed their cannabis use and the responses indicated that over 57% of the population consumed phytocannabinoids — cannabinoids derived from the cannabis sativa or hemp plant. After analysis, the researches concluded that cannabis consumption was associated with both a lower BMI and lower rate of obesity.
It’s worth noting that data indicates cannabis consumers have a higher calorie intake from both fatty foods and beer, which is known to stimulate fat in the belly region, yet still cannabis consumers have a lower BMI than those who don’t consume cannabis or hemp in any form.
Choose Your Dietary Fats Wisely and Consume Full Spectrum CBD Oil
Americans specifically have high rates of obesity. In recent years, we’ve seen a spike in Omega-6 or linoleic acid consumption partially resulting from the use of hydrogenated oils, which is basically lab-engineered fat. Scientists are now reporting issues with artery wall agitation and increased rates of cancer and obesity resulting from adverse ratios of omega-6 to omega-3s.
When this ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is elevated, an overstimulation of CB1 receptors may occur. CB1 receptors are directly correlated to energy levels, appetite, and fat metabolic rate.
Scientists believe that CBD blocks the CB1 receptor, thereby offering anti-obesity properties and reducing the negative impact of the overstimulation of CB1 receptors.
One solution is to increase your omega-3 intake in relation to your omega-6s. Our bodies can use omega-3 fatty acids to process the active ingredients in cannabis and our bodies also convert omega-3s to anti-inflammatory endocannbinoids. Flax seeds, hemp seeds, or chia seeds are a healthy source of omega-3s.
Full spectrum hemp CBD oil, unlike THC-free “broad spectrum” oil, is defined as containing small amounts of THC, but less than the legal US limit .3% potency. Incorporating the phytocannabinoid THC in to one’s diet may increase appetite, but the evidence suggests that THC down-regulates the CB1 receptor, thereby reducing the BMI of those who consume this compound. Therefore, including this important cannabinoid as part of your overall cannabinoid regimen or in your diet will likely improve your health and reduce the size of your waistline.
One may also increase coconut oil in the diet, which simulates saturated fats found in animal products such as butter. Saturated fats are great carriers for cannabinoids such as CBD since cannabinoids are fat-soluble, meaning that our bodies need fat to metabolize them.
